First Post: Expectations

What are your expectations of me as your teacher? What can I do to help you succeed? If you need help brainstorming, think back to a teacher who has inspired and challenged you. How did this teacher help you find success?

Teachers that I have had in the past were constantly challenging my mentally and in my work. They almost always made time to assist me in my work and on papers.
Another way that some of my teachers aided in my success on papers and projects was when they offered ideas for improvement without marking down, even if the paper or project was "fantastic."

Last year my teacher taugh me alot about critical reading and becoming a better writter. She was a teacher just as much as a student in the class. I didn't feel like she was doing all the teaching, but that we were also teaching ourselves and one and other. I feel like that was why I learned as much as I did last year.

My past teachers who have really influenced me were very good at treating students as PEOPLE, not just as brains open for learning. It makes sense that if teachers have commitments, assignments, time with family and friends, then students will have the same things. Also, I believe work, both at home and school, should help us learn what we need to in the subject for next year and for life as a whole. Assignments without a point for teachers or students don't help out anyone!

Hooray hooray, and thanks so much,

Meghan C.

An excellent teacher to me is one who challenged me mentally. They ask questions that get your mind, you know, working. And when I need to ask a question about how I should study for something, or why aren't I getting this, can you help me here, they don't say, if you think about it hard, you'll know, or something along those lines. THAT is not challenging. That is frustrating. That is about all I need to be happy.

My expectations of you as a teacher is to challenge me. Not challenging me in a way that is way over my head, but reasonable. I want you to assign writing that I need to think hard about and reading that needs to be processed. To help me suceed you can tell us how you like things done and what teachers/people will expect of us in the near future. This teacher I liked helped me find success by letting me try something new and seeing how I did with it. Anytime I needed help with something she threw guidelines or ideas at me. I was able to eperience new things, but when the time came that I needed help, she was there.

I really agree with Meghan! An awesome teacher is one who treats me like a human, not just a brain. One who challenges me and inspires me to crazy new topics. I love it when I can go home and brag to my parents about how I am smarter than them... haha, just joking. But, I really do love to learn things that are very usable in my life. So far you have been doing a wonderful job! I ALWAYS look forward to going to English, because you have established a respectful, but still comfortable atmosphere. I commend you! Thanks!

Teachers in my past that i have meshed especially well with have always challenged me and given me free rein when it came to my writing. I love to be creative and do somthing diffrent. But healthy critisim is alright. Negativity doesnt help at all.

Teachers that I have really learned a lot from are those who challenged me to become a student who they knew I could be. Especially with writing, not comparing my work in proportion to the other students in the class, rather stretching my capabilities as a learner. It is also beneficial to have a teacher who wants a student to come in and receive help with papers or projects or reading. If I know my teacher is open to helping me and wants to see me improve, I'll be more likely to come in and ask questions.

I do want a teacher that challenges me, but I also want one that realizes that I have other homework and does not overload me, which sometimes is a problem with my English classes. One thing that really helped me lasted year was one on one feddback on my writing. I thouhgt it really helped me to be able to have my teacher read my essay and give me specific feedback.

Teachers that I learn the most from are those who challenge and push me,but they never make me uncomfortable. The best thing about a teacher is when they realize you have a really busy life outside of school and are always willing to help you. That doesn't me we don't do our homework and get away with it but, rather we can relate the things we learn to our life and hopefully apply it somewhere else.

I can't really tell you what to do to help me succeed, but I can tell you what NOT to do. I hate it when teachers spend more than half the class talking at me/the class, especially if notes are involved. It gets very hard to pay attention to the teacher. And it would be really cool if you don't favor certain groups of people grade wise, because I have had teacher do that in the past, and after a while people don't even try cause they already know what kind of grade they'll get.

My expectations of a teacher are, the teacher challenging the class mentally everyday and helping the students that struggle. Also, to help me succeed personally is by integrating more and more of technology into the class.

It is really important for me that I feel comfortable enough in a class to try something new and different without having to worry about how it will influence my grade. I find that in a lot of my classes, I do the work a certain way only to get a grade that I want. But especially in an English class, I love being able to experiment with new ideas without fretting over a drop in my GPA. I am also the type of person that needs to know the purpose for whatever we are doing. This usually isn't a problem in my English classes but on occasion I have to wonder if there is any method to the madness. For example, when annotating a novel, I sometimes find myself annotating things not because it helps me to understand it better, but because I haven't put in an annotation for a while. Also, I love getting feedback on my papers. It really helps me see what my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer. So far, you have been doing a wonderful job both inspiring and challenging me so keep up the good work!

I don't really have much expectations for a teacher, except the initial qualifications.

I guess that if a teacher promises to treat me as an adult, that they better make sure that they keep to that promise. I really hate conflicting ideas of what was promised. Not only does the older one win, but they are usually the wrong one.

I hope this class will be as fun as last years.

Well, I like to brainstorm and I don't mind being challenged. I really like teachers that can encourage me to do more and push myself. I also had a good teacher that showed us all these different ways and activities in order to help us better understand the best way to do something. I also liked if the teacher would comment me or write "great!" or "good job!"
on my paper. That's really nice. But you're doing a fantastic job and I really like your class... so far...just kidding! Thanks!

Last year I started out in regular English and then moved to Honors English second semester. I didn’t really learn that much in both classes. I really agree with erinl in a teacher should be as much of a student as a teacher. I really like how this semester has started off. I think that so far I have really learned how to analyze stories and look for the small things that can make all the difference.

I really agree with Annika and Meghan. I don't like to be treated like only a student 24/7. I like being treated like a human who is capable of thinking and contributing.
A teacher that has influenced me in the past would teach us valuable information that we will use in the future, but she was also comfortable with taking a step back and letting us teach ourselves, each other, and even her. She gave great feedback on papers and other assignments, but also let us step into her shoes once in a while and give feedback to each other. It was a great learning environment knowing that you were able to take control of your own education.
Besides that, I would say to challenge us with questions and assignments, but nothing too extreme as we all have lives outside of school. So far you have been doing a great job! Thanks and keep up the good work!!

What you can do for us this year is just to make sure we understand the material and what we are supposed to do. And also be available for help.

My expectations of this class is that you keep an organized schedule. In order for me to be successful I need to be able to plan and coordinate my time. I have had alot of amazing teachers in the past who really have "up"ed the notch to help me when needed and to create a high thought level. I'm excited for this class and hope that we can take it one step further!

My teacher last year really helped me on my writing. Even though at that time, i felt like he was the worst teacher ever, he helped me in long run! This year all i expect is the improvement on my writing. I am very used to constructive criticism and i think it really helps me become a better writer/reader, so i highly encourage you to correct my mistakes and guide me!
Also, i want the class to be fun :]

The best teacher that I think I've ever had was my eighth grade English teacher, and what made me enjoy the class so much was that the discussions were stimulating and in-depth, and all aspects of the class challenged me as a writer, but my teacher was also a mom and understood how stressful school could be. She did give a fair amount of homework, but she placed more value in the spontaneous in-class discussions than she did on the homework. As an honors student, I don't expect to be babied, but I also like balance. As a teacher I expect you to offer suggestions on writing assignments so that I can improve on the next one, and also to challenge while also assisting in any way possible. Thanks for taking the time to ask and hear our opinions and experiences!

Considering the fact I had you last year, I expect from you the same that I did last year. You are always willing to help the class out if we don't understand something. Also, it helps when we change our ways of learning/discussing what we've read. I really enjoy variety in teaching styles. What was also great about last year was you gave us direct feedback on our work to help us improve in our writing.

I think that you could just make sure that we understand everything and be available for help.If I know a teacher is wanting me to learn and ask questions I am more likely to ask for help if I need it.

Teachers that I have had in the past that I've really liked have really pushed me mentally, to help me reach my full potential.

I can't say that I have expectations, but as my teacher I would like you to constantly encourage, challenge and humor me. :]

I like doing varieties of activities during class (as we have been doing) and of course I like the fun art projects. As my teacher, I would like you to let me know what I can improve on, and always be available if I decide to come to you and ask what i can improve on. On papers that I get back, I ALWAYS want to know what could have been done differently that would have made it better.
Teachers that I have most admired were ones that helped me to have fun while I worked on difficult projects for classes, and ones that I got to know over the course of the year.

Mrs. Kakos, your an awesome english teacher, i like your teching style, so there really is nothing that you can do to help me learn better...

My favorite teachers view me as a person, not a "kid," or "a mind for molding." Also, they didn't expect things from us that then, in turn, they couldn't do themselves. I understand if after school you have sports teams to coach and things with family and friends on the weekends as well as other classes work to grade that might make it so you can't grade our work quickly. I like teachers that understand the same situation for us with our work. We have lives and other classes too. The only thing that I don't like teachers to do is to take of crazy amounts of points for tunning in something late, and then on th same assignment they return it to us weeks after they said because "things cam up."
Should be a fun year!

My most challenging teacher said he hates me so it will be kind of hard to match him. It's fine though we both hate each other especially when I hugged him to make him mad and he punched and stabbed me. Although from his hatred sprung him questioning every little thing I did. I just expect you to do the same without the hate.

Last year, my teacher was super tough. She graded hard, and was constantly challenging us to go further in everything we did.

However, she KNEW we could do it. There was no doubt in her mind that we would exceed all of her expectations. This confidence and encouragement worked really well, and in the end, the improvement I saw was amazing.

So please push us and challenge us, but be there to help and guide along the way.
